Cannes: Todd McCarthy Recalls Altman and Blind Date With Margot Kidder

This story first appeared in the May 17 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Cannes is the place where, given a choice, most filmmakers would like to be anointed, to be admitted to the pantheon. So it was for Robert Altman, who, after 15 years of struggling in Hollywood won the Palme d'Or in 1970 for M*A*S*H in a year when there were, frankly, not many other serious competitors for the top prize. And yet, when the award was announced in the old Palais, there were boos -- not in huge numbers, but nonetheless emphatic and aggressive in the manner of self-righteous agitators. And despite the absence of words, they bore an unmistakable anti-American tone.

As a mere student overseas who had finagled press credentials to gain entree to the holy grail of film festivals for the first time, I was startled by this outburst for several reasons. First, it was rude; second, the award was well-merited and, third, it seemed ridiculous to object to a filmmaker who was irreverently anti-establishment himself and whose film was partly a critique of the then-raging Vietnam War.

For his part, Altman seemed unperturbed, secure in the knowledge that, after the long wait, his career now was irrevocably launched. But only days before, I had seen him on the Croisette wearing a black armband in protest of the just-begun American bombing of Cambodia -- just like most of the other Americans, including Arthur Penn, Candice Bergen and Stuart Hagmann, director of The Strawberry Statement, an MGM student-protest film riding the post-Easy Rider wave that won the jury prize.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: 'Cleopatra' at Cannes

The schizophrenic nature of Cannes in that wild year was perhaps best epitomized by the screening of Woodstock. The incongruity of a mostly French over-50 crowd wearing black tie, gowns and furs to a three-hour wallow in a hippie-dippy rock 'n' roll bacchanalia was hilarious -- and it was probably the only showing of that hugely successful film at which most of the audience walked out before it was over.

As an American "journalist," I was something of a novelty, since very few U.S. critics attended the festival in those days; Time's Richard Corliss hadn't started coming yet, nor had Roger Ebert. The New York Times sent down its Paris correspondents for a few days. The only professional American critics who actually crossed the pond that year were the New York Daily News' omnipresent Kathleen Carroll and Rex Reed, then at the height of his celebrity and with just one month to go before the release of Myra Breckinridge, in which his acting would put him on the receiving end of brickbats for a change. But during the festival, Reed was in rare form, telling hilarious stories about the making of that benighted film and generally slagging off everyone and everything as if applying for retroactive membership in the Algonquin circle.

Later, when he got home, Reed wrote for the Los Angeles Times an article called "How I Went to the Cannes Film Festival and Hated Every Minute of It," a title which was disingenuous in the extreme; even if he disliked most of the films he saw, he was always having a roaring good time whenever I saw him, and he kept coming back.

No matter what motivated the naysayers the night of the Palmares, they were wrong and the jury was right: M*A*S*H deserved the top award, for reasons both cinematic and cultural. Seven years later, however, it was Altman who was in a fury, burned by his pal Pauline Kael, who was on the jury when the director turned up in Cannes with 3 Women. Confident that his champion could cajole her fellow jury members, including president Roberto Rossellini, into giving him a top award, Altman couldn't believe that his film received only a best actress award for Shelley Duvall. In an unforgettable scene I recounted in my THR review of a recent biography of Kael, Altman spotted her in the waiting lounge of the Nice Airport the next day and mercilessly laid into her, yelling the most obscene possible names.

STORY: Cannes: Todd McCarthy on the Promise of This Year's Lineup

The composition of juries has changed over the years. In Cannes' early days, there was always a heavy French presence, Russians and Eastern Europeans were almost always included as a political gesture, and major authors were often included. The 1960 jury, headed by Georges Simenon, also included Henry Miller, so it was no surprise when that libidinous combination bestowed the Palme d'Or upon Fellini's La Dolce Vita rather than on L'avventura, Ballad of a Soldier or The Virgin Spring.

I always enjoyed it when literary figures such as Tennessee Williams, William Styron, Lawrence Durrell, Erskine Caldwell, Irwin Shaw, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, Francoise Sagan, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Norman Mailer were on juries. There was even a phase when film critics were not uncommonly found in the mix. Now that the closing awards ceremonies have become a big TV event, however, lowly scribes are out and glamorous actresses are in, a syndrome epitomized in 1998, the year jury president Martin Scorsese was surrounded on the panel by Lena Olin, Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder and Chiara Mastroianni.

The experiences jury members have during the course of two weeks greatly depends upon the personality of the jury president. As I've heard it from numerous participants over the years, the two extremes -- from ultra-demanding to laid-back -- can be fairly represented by Liv Ullmann and Clint Eastwood. President Ullmann, it's been said, was the ultimate taskmaster, demanding lengthy daily meetings at which each jury member was required to deliver detailed critiques of each and every film, even those considered entirely dismissible. By contrast, Eastwood reportedly only gathered his troops together a couple of times before the final deliberations, with noncontenders simply dropped from the conversation and serious candidates amiably discussed.

STORY: How Cannes Sacrificed Tradition to Land 'The Great Gatsby'

Looking over the complete list of Cannes prize winners since the beginning of the Palme d'Or era in 1955, it's surprising how often juries got it more or less right; even with the advantage of calm hindsight, there are very few instances when the winners of the top prizes were simply ludicrous or obvious masterpieces were neglected.

At the same time, it's notable how few major French directors have claimed the top prize. Across nearly six decades, only seven home-country filmmakers have won the Palme d'Or; never honored, despite having repeatedly appeared in the competition, have been the greats Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Resnais, Rohmer, Rivette and Tavernier.

Back in those early years, contradictions, absurd contrasts and chance encounters were the rule of the day at what was, once you had a pass, a wide-open festival compared to the highly regimented, barricaded, publicist-controlled event it's become (at that time, stars and filmmakers strolled the streets unchaperoned like anyone else). When I arrived, I knew only one other person who would be in Cannes -- still, not only did I see 30-plus films in less than two weeks but in short order I was also set up on a blind date with Margot Kidder, drank with mercenaries at the late, lamented Le Petit Carlton, met the Warhol-scene star Joe Dallesandro and director Paul Morrissey and, after a chance encounter at the Carlton Bar, had a fascinating four-hour dinner with the great Ben-Hur director William Wyler and his producer brother Robert.

STORY: Cannes: Official Selection Packed With Potential Awards Season Contenders

On the streets every night were gobs of American sailors, on shore leave from the Navy's 6th Fleet that was anchored in harbor awaiting a possible move toward Cyprus; tending to them were legions of pretty ratty-looking hookers. The back streets also were where the new Directors' Fortnight events were held, as were the cinemas holding market screenings of often gamey and pornographic titles.

For a kid like me, it was Cannes, Open City.

10 TV Pilots Likely to Score Series Pickups

James Spader

As broadcast network executives sit behind closed doors pouring over focus group testing results on a whopping 100 pilots and which among them can best fill their needs, scores of showrunners are on stand-by as the decisions on which comedies and dramas will land slots on the 2013-14 schedules are expected to come starting Wednesday.

The Hollywood Reporter dialed up industry insiders and has compiled 10 of the thrillers, soapy procedurals, comic adaptations, family and workplace comedies that stand the best shot of earning series pickups.

STORY: TV Pilots 2013: The Complete Guide

1. Beverly Hills Cop (CBS)
From executive producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield), the continuation of the feature film franchise tested through the roof and is considered perfectly on-brand for CBS. The cop drama starring Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley's rookie cop son is described as a procedural that comes wrapped with instant brand recognition and an easy to market premise -- and Eddie Murphy attached. Plus Beverly Hills Cop feature producer Paramount also handpicked the Sony Pictures Television drama to make its return to TV production.

2. Mom (CBS)
We hope Chuck Lorre uses part of his summer break to pen a lot of vanity cards as the prolific showrunner is poised to have four shows on the air. Mom, starring Anna Faris as a newly sober single mom attempting to get her life in order, has been considered a sure thing to make the schedule since Lorre and his Two and a Half Men co-writers Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker sold the spec to CBS. The show also marks Lorre's first female-fronted comedy since the 1990s. With How I Met Your Mother coming to an end after next season, CBS needs to find a new half-hour that works (RIP, Partners.)

STORY: Upfronts 2013: Complete Network Scorecard

3. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC)
ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee was already mulling a place on the schedule for the Marvel comics adaptation from The Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Joss Whedon back in January, touting the Ming-Na starrer as a prime family viewing. Industry insiders, meanwhile, envision the drama as a solution for ABC's Thursday at 8 p.m. problem -- a slot that's been problematic for years (see Charlie's Angels, Last Resort).

4. Tomorrow People (CW)
The adaptation of the 1970s U.K. series of the same name fits right into the younger-skewing network's sci-fi wheelhouse and comes with a built in pedigree featuring two of the network's most valued creators: The Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec and Arrow's Greg Berlanti. The drama tells the story of several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers, including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil.

PHOTOS: Broadcast TV's Returning Shows 2013-14

5. The Goldbergs (ABC)
The dysfunctional Wonder Years set in the 1980s is inspired by the childhold of Breaking In creator Adam F. Goldberg and counts Bridesmaids breakout Wendi McLendon-Covey among its cast. The family-friendly single-camera comedy has been generating great buzz coming out of last week's pilot screenings.

6. Blacklist (NBC)
Billed as "one of the best scripts of the year" by one TV agent, the drama about the world's most wanted criminal who turns himself in comes with a star with major TV appeal in James Spader, who would make his return to NBC following his run on The Office. Consider the drama from Perfect Stranger's Jon Bokenkamp and Alias' John Eisendrath this year's Revolution.

7. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)
Fox is expected to pickup at least one, potentially two workplace comedies as it shops for a companion to the already renewed The Mindy Project. Expect the cop comedy from Parks and Recreation duo Dan Goor and Mike Schur to be among them. Oh, and the cast happens to include Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher and Terry Crews, the latter of whom was one of pilot season's most sought-after actors.

PHOTOS: The Faces of Pilot Season 2013

8. Rake (Fox)
After luring Kevin Bacon to his first small-screen regular role in The Following, look for Fox to repeat that strategy with Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear starring in the adaptation of the Australian drama. The Little Miss Sunshine alum plays a House-like character described as a brilliant but self-destructive attorney in the project from Rescue Me's Peter Tolan.

9. Crisis (aka the untitled Rand Ravich drama) (NBC)
The Washington thriller starring Dermot Mulroney and Gillian Anderson has the slight edge over J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron's Believe. The drama from the creator of Life has also been generating rave reviews for its cast, which also includes 666 Park's Rachael Taylor and James Lafferty (One Tree Hill). Look for cable-type fare in the vein of Homeland to feature prominently among NBC's drama pickups.

10. Reign (CW)
The CW will likely hand out three additional series orders beyond Plec's Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals and add the drama about Mary Queen of Scots' rise to power as its big swing. Sources say the network likes the international appeal of Reign, which filmed in Europe and counts a largely unknown cast led by Adelaide Kane in her second stateside role (she'll next be seen in the upcoming third season of MTV's Teen Wolf.)

Which pilots are you rooting for? Hit the comments below with your thoughts and stay tuned to The Hollywood Reporter's The Live Feed for the latest series orders and upfront news in the coming weeks.

Liberty Media CEO Talks Cable Consolidation, Charter Investment

Greg Maffei - P 2011

Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei said Wednesday that the U.S. cable industry could see another round of consolidation. But he said his company will wait and see if Charter Communications, in which Liberty recently acquired a 27.3 percent stake, will be a buyer or seller.

Some analysts have suggested that Charter could drive cable consolidation given the history of Liberty and its chairman John Malone as acquirers. But on Liberty's first-quarter earnings conference call, Maffei left all options open.

"The Charter business plan on a standalone basis is very attractive," he said. Consolidation in U.S. cable could occur amid the availability of "relatively inexpensive" money, strong cable cash flows and synergies around content and network costs. The industry "could be in for a round of consolidation," Maffei argued. "Whether Charter is a consolidator or consolidee, we'll see."

He called Charter, led by former Cablevision Systems top executive Tom Rutledge, "an appealing investment" given its strong management team, "a relatively under-invested network" and a "relatively less competitive environment" given a lack of competition from Verizon's FiOS service in Charter markets. Maffei said that the decision to invest in Charter also came amid "a good environment to be in cable in general."

Asked about his plans to use rights to increase Liberty's Charter stake to 35 percent and eventually 40 percent, Maffei said there are currently no plans or decisions to go beyond the initial stake. Instead, Liberty will see how things play out.

Could Liberty sell the Atlanta Braves baseball team? Maffei said the team has turned out to be a "better investment than we might have originally anticipated." He added that Liberty was "very happy" that the Braves are currently in first position in the National League East, adding that contributes to making the team "the last thing we'll divest."

Asked to explain some of the positive factors of the Braves investment, Maffei said that changes to some of the team's TV rights arrangements are positive, and that the team's value continues to increase.

Discussing Liberty's 27 percent stake in Live Nation Entertainment, Maffei said the main challenge for the live events giant is "anemic" free cash flow growth, but the company is working with the company's team to address that. Liberty can raise its stake to 35 percent without board approval, he said.

Chris Christie Talks Weight Loss Surgery on 'Rock Center' (Video)

Chris Christie Time 100 - P 2011

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, long the butt of jokes about his weight, opens up about his recent lap-band operation in an interview with NBC's Brian Williams airing Friday on Rock Center.

A video preview of the sitdown shows the Republican politician (and potential presidential contender) explaining that he secretly underwent the procedure in February (after consulting with weight-loss surgery specialist Dr. George Fielding) because he wanted to be healthy for his wife, Mary Pat, and their four children.

"Last fall, I was turning 50 and it really was a moment of reflection for me," Christie says. "And so I really just felt like for Mary Pat and for the kids that I needed to take a more significant step to try to get my weight under control so that I could have a really active next half of my life."

Christie, who mocked his size by eating a donut on The Late Show With David Letterman two weeks before surgery, added: "The biggest thing about it for me has been I’m just not very hungry anymore and that’s a huge change for me."

'American Idol': 5 Drastic Changes to Save the Show

American Idol 5 Changes - H 2013From left: Carey, Lythgoe, Minaj and Warwick all could be out next season.

This story first appeared in the May 17 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

An unprecedented air of uncertainty surrounds the once-dominant American Idol as the Fox show continues to slide in the ratings. Down 22 percent this season, its May 2 episode was the least-watched ever, drawing just under 11 million viewers. Battles between freshman judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj -- both onscreen and on Twitter -- have combined with near-geriatric theme nights (among season 12's guest mentors: Smokey Robinson and Harry Connick Jr.) and led producers to put all options on the table. Here are five ways Idol might look different next season.

PHOTOS: 'American Idol' Season 12: The Top 10 Finalists

1. Another judge overhaul

Tension between Carey and Minaj is said to be so bad that they never cross paths until cameras are rolling. In all likelihood, neither will be invited back. Says a production insider: “The show has always taken pride in being about the contestants, not the judges. And if the judges had a little rapport with each other, it wouldn’t be all about them. Instead, all anybody ever wants to talk about is how the judges don't get along. It’s exactly what producers didn’t want.” So what happens next? Fox and Fremantle already have reached out to former judge Jennifer Lopez, who will perform on the May 16 finale. And sources say they are looking at several non-diva music industry contenders.

2. Bye-bye, theme nights

"These contestants are not interested in the old stuff," notes an Idol insider of themed performance shows focused on The Beatles and Burt Bacharach as NBC's The Voice, also on a downward trajectory ratings-wise, offers Pink and Justin Bieber songs. A highly placed source says Idol producers likely will do away with themes altogether since the free-choice method of semifinals had much stronger tune-in.

3. New executive producers?

While grade-school pals Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick are credited with driving the Idol train for 12 years (Lythgoe took a two-season break) -- and keeping it from going off the rails -- they're usually the first to shoot down finalists' contemporary song choices. Show insiders speculate that the sixtysomething Brits might be sent home next year, but a production source insists talk of the duo's exit is "rumor."

VIDEO: 'American Idol' Homecoming With David Cook and Casey Abrams

4. Scrap the summer tour?

If lower ratings translate to weak ticket sales for Idol's 40-date summer trek, which kicks off June 29 and hits venues like Detroit's Joe Louis Arena (capacity: 20,000-plus), promoter AEG might consider ditching the tour to save money and headaches. "You have to match the public's interest," says Jared Paul, who has overseen the Glee and Dancing With the Stars tours. "Whether somebody will part with their hard-earned money is all talent-dependent." Worth noting: The Voice and Fox's The X Factor don't currently take their talent on the road as a package offering.

5. Format tweaks

After 12 seasons, nine as broadcast's top-rated show, drastic reinvention might not be in the Idol vocabulary as cheerleaders insist that vote counts and social media engagement have not declined at all. Rather, sources say "format tweaks" are in store for the future. Will they be enough to save the show?

'The Voice's' Adam Levine Inks Development Deal at NBC (Exclusive)

Adam Levine Black and White Portrait - P 2013

Adam Levine's NBC footprint is about to grow larger.

The Voice coach and Maroon 5 frontman has inked a one-year first-look development deal at NBC with his longtime manager-turned-producing partner Jordan Feldstein. Together, the pair will create both scripted and alternative programming to serve as series and specials for the network.

"It would be impossible to quantify Adam's influence and importance to the success of The Voice," noted Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming for NBC Entertainment. "Given those enormous contributions, we're very anxious to work with him and Jordan to see what future shows they develop that can find a home here at NBC."

STORY: Inside Adam Levine's $35 Million-Plus a Year Empire

The latest move comes as Levine continues to diversify his resume as he shrewdly capitalizes on the success of Voice. Since the top-rated singing competition launched in spring 2011, Levine has launched an acting career, which has included roles in film (Can a Song Save Your Life?) and TV (American Horror Story), as well as fashion and fragrance lines. The growing empire includes a suite of endorsement deals (Proactiv among them), a guest hosting gig on Saturday Night Live and a big boost to Maroon 5's sales as well.

That the network would look to do more business with Levine comes as little surprise given its success with him as a Voice coach. Unlike fellow coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green, who sat out the current iteration, Levine is currently participating in his fourth season of the series and will return with the show's original panel in the fall. In fact, in a THR cover story earlier this spring, Feldstein acknowledged that NBC is "going to have to physically remove Adam from the building [because] he loves doing the show and it's been great for his career."

PHOTOS: 'The Voice': Meet the Season 4 Coaches

Levine and Feldstein (actor Jonah Hill's brother) have been close family friends since they were kids growing up in Los Angeles. The duo's fathers had been best friends since the men were 14. Feldstein, who is now CEO of Los Angeles-based Career Artist Management, has managed Maroon 5 from their formation more than 10 years ago. In addition, he oversees the careers of multi-platinum acts such as Alanis Morissette, Sara Bareilles and Robin Thicke.

It's worth noting that this is not Levine's first foray behind the camera. The musician, who is also repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman, has dabbled with producing scripted fare before, including a 2011 ensemble comedy set at a karaoke bar that was being developed at NBC.

The Beatles' 'Let It Be' to Hit Broadway

Let It Be Broadway Poster - H 2013

NEW YORK -- When Broadway theater landlords find themselves in times of trouble the solution frequently is to plug in a musical hit factory with a built-in fan base. And what more robust fan base than that of the Beatles?

Direct from London's West End, the latest Fab Four anthology show, Let It Be, will begin performances July 16 at the St. James Theatre, with official opening slated for July 24.

A concert experience that combines live musicians with state-of-the-art projection technology, the show samples from 40 of the Beatles greatest hits, among them "Yesterday," "Hey Jude," "Come Together" and the title song.

STORY: Magnolia Nabs Beatles Doc 'Good Ol’ Freda'

Produced on Broadway by Jeff Parry/Annerin Productions, Let It Be is the latest in a string of Beatles tribute shows that includes Cirque du Soleil's Love and the bio-musical about the group's early days, Backbeat. The genre had some success in the late '70s on Broadway with the revue Beatlemania.

A similar concert-style salute, Rain, played for nine months on Broadway in the 2010-11 season. While that show also came from Annerin Productions, the new anthology devotes more time to songs from the later years, after the band had stopped performing live.

The addition of Let It Be to Broadway's summer schedule continues a trend of limited-engagement music shows being brought in to fill gaps between legitimate musical and play bookings. The past season has seen strong business from concert runs by Barry Manilow and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, as well as the Rascals nostalgia trip, Once Upon a Dream.

Let It Be is scheduled to run through Dec. 29. Cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.

Carla Gugino and Peter Grosz to Star Off Broadway in 'A Kid Like Jake'

Carla Gugino Peter Grosz Split - H 2013

NEW YORK -- Carla Gugino will return to the New York stage, alongside Peter Grosz, a longtime writer on The Colbert Report, in the world premiere of Daniel Pearle's new play, A Kid Like Jake.

Directed by Evan Cabnet, the Off Broadway production will be staged at the Claire Tow Theater as part of Lincoln Center Theater's LCT3 initiative devoted to emerging artists. It begins performances June 2, with official opening set for June 17.

Caroline Aaron and Michelle Beck complete the cast. The play centers on a husband and wife (Gugino and Grosz) whose nurturing approach to their precocious four-year-old son runs into obstacles when his passion for Cinderella and playing dress-up causes concern at the Manhattan private schools to which they apply.

Gugino's recent stage work includes the 2012 Broadway revival of Athol Fugard's The Road to Mecca, in which she starred opposite Rosemary Harris; and a 2006 Off Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, with Blythe Danner.

Grosz was a member until 2010 of the Emmy-winning writing team on The Colbert Report, also making occasional on-air appearances on the show. As an actor, he was seen last year on HBO's Veep.

LCT3 last season proved a strong platform for another Comedy Central alumnus, Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show With Jon Stewart). He scored rave reviews starring at the same venue in Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

'Best Ink' Host Pete Wentz Talks Tattoo Lessons: 'What Makes It Great is the Story' (Video)

Pete Wentz got his first tattoo at 15 years old. Now 33, the Fall Out Boy bassist continues his education as the host of Oxygen's Best Ink.

"On this show, I probably offer the perspective of someone in the audience that is really into tattoos but doesn't necessarily know some of the [technical] things," Wentz tells The Hollywood Reporter.

CONCERT REVIEW: Fall Out Boy Returns to Form at The Roxy

As a liaison of sorts between the experts and casual viewers, Wentz revels in geeking out over his new knowledge of line weights, techniques, terminology and the artistry behind the competing tattoo artists and expert judges.

And while many people will "line up" for a "free tattoo and some screen time," he's discovered, consumers should be wary of just who is inking their skin. Wentz offers a list of qualifications to look for when choosing a tattoo artist.

"I think you need to find an artist that you really trust," he says. "So you know their portfolio, you've seen tattoos that they've done, but more than that you know about some experiences that they've had. When you go into get the tattoo, sometimes an artist might be like, 'Well, maybe that won't  look great on that part of your body' -- an artist that's actually trying to give you the best version of the tattoo that you want."

Because, let's face it: not everyone has great ideas when it comes to their tattoos.

For those with questionable concepts, "the artist will help rearrange it and make it an idea that you would want to live with forever," Wentz says.

Of his own tattoos, the musician says he values pieces that hold sentimental value and hidden significance. "A tattoo can be good from the art, but what makes it great is the story that goes with the tattoo," he says. "Just stuff you wouldn't know unless they explain it to you. To me, that's what makes a great tattoo."

PHOTOS: Pete and Bronx Wentz, Boy Band IM5, Ed O'Neill and Kids (Not Grandkids!) Turn Out for Kidstock

A father to 4-year-old Bronx Mowgli, Wentz has said in multiple interviews that he would someday tattoo his son's name on his body in the child's handwriting -- but that one will have to wait. Bronx can currently draw X's and the "two bubbles of a B," but not yet his name. Hey, only three letters to go.

"I think I have a long way to go" until Bronx starts looking into some skin art of his own, Wentz adds with a smile. "The nature of being someone's son or daughter is you rebel against your parents, so I think the rebellion might be long division or something."

But when it comes to tattooing a loved one's mug on your skin -- a la Amber Rose and her fresh Wiz Khalifa tatt -- Wentz abides by the parents and children rule.

"Usually in the world of tattoos, we say that you only get a kid or a parent tattooed on you," he says, "just because those people will be in your life forever and will always matter to you." (Though he notes that his parents might be more "stoked" if he doesn't get a tattoo in their honor.)

Best Ink airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. Below, find an exclusive sneak peek of the May 8 episode. For more from THR's interview with Wentz, watch the video above and check back to the Earshot blog next week.

Discovery's 'Great Bear Stakeout': Grizzly Defends Her Cub (Exclusive Video)

This is one mother no one could call overprotective.

The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive clip from Discovery Channel's forthcoming special Great Bear Stakeout, for which expert guides and filmmakers spent an entire season living alongside the grizzlies in Alaska to see what exactly it takes for them to survive.

PHOTOS: The Dark Side of Reality TV: 25 Tragic Deaths

In this clip, a mother is forced to defend her cub (and their dinner) from a much larger bear in a fight that could end in death.

Great Bear Stakeout aims to give viewers will get an up-close look at the grizzlies, who come out of hibernation each year only to be thrust into a life-and-death battle to feed and mate, with the drama culminating in the annual salmon run. Each bear must double its body weight in less than six months to survive another winter.

Great Bear Stakeout airs -- somewhat appropriately -- on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. John Goodman narrates the two-hour special.

Sofia Coppola: The Trials, Tears and Talent

This story first appeared in the May 17 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Think of Sofia Coppola, and an image comes to mind -- of a globe-trotting hipster whose iconic last name has propelled her to fame; who is best friends with designer Marc Jacobs, has modeled for photographer Mario Testino, guest-edited French Vogue, had her own fashion label and now is married to Thomas Mars of ultracool French rock band Phoenix. All of which makes this reporter slightly hesitant as he waits in a small neighborhood restaurant close to Coppola's home in New York's West Village. Then she enters, and any skepticism vanishes.

The Oscar winner hovers quietly by the doorway, without makeup, dressed in jeans and a simple cream sweater. Rather than being larger-than-life, she appears almost embarrassed to take up too much space.

"I remember my mom saying, 'People aren't going to like you because they'll think you're a snob,' " she says, later. " 'You have to go out of your way to show them you're not a jerk.' "

She is surprisingly a bit old-fashioned: She doesn't tweet, doesn't have a Facebook page, hasn't watched most reality TV (Keeping Up With the Kardashians is an exception) and reads books like Edith Wharton's The Custom of the Country -- though she's only halfway through. "I'm a very slow reader," she explains, blushing slightly.

PHOTOS: Sofia Coppola: The Trials, Tears and Talent of 'The Bling Ring' Director

There is sweetness to her, and subtlety. There's also sadness -- just a hint, but it's there.

"Everyone thinks I'm like that," she says of her projected melancholy. "I have that part of myself, but it's not [everything]."

At 41, Francis Ford Coppola's youngest child has made five films, including the soon-to-be-released The Bling Ring, lived in Los Angeles, Paris and New York, won a best screenplay Oscar for Lost in Translation, been lambasted for her role in The Godfather: Part III after Winona Ryder dropped out, dated one celebrity director (Quentin Tarantino) and divorced another (she says of Spike Jonze, "I didn't marry the right person").

But perhaps the defining moment of her life came at age 15, when she lost Gian-Carlo, 22, one of her two older siblings.

In 1986, Sofia was with her mother, Eleanor, a former set decorator and the maker of award-winning documentaries including Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991), when her father called from Washington, D.C., where he was shooting Gardens of Stone. Gian-Carlo had been killed in a horrific speedboat accident in Annapolis, Md., from injuries sustained after a towline connecting two other vessels tore into him. His fiancee was two months pregnant with a baby girl, who would be born the following year; Ryan O'Neal's son, Griffin, was steering the boat at the time and later would be prosecuted for manslaughter. (He eventually pleaded guilty to negligent operation of a boat.)

"Those weren't carefree years for me," says Sofia. "I felt, when my brother died, my teenage years got interrupted. I was going through a trauma. Therapy helped -- it was really important for me to be healed -- but it becomes a part of who you are."

STORY: Cannes: Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring' to Open Un Certain Regard

Who Coppola is now will be on full display at Cannes, where The Bling Ring will screen May 16.

"She's not how most [people] would perceive her to be," says Kirsten Dunst, who played Marie Antoinette in Coppola's 2006 film and starred in her first feature, 1999's The Virgin Suicides. "She's not precious. She's real."

Coppola is returning to the scene of one of her career low points, seven years after the $40 million Marie Antoinette polarized audiences, leading to a standing ovation from some and boos from others.

"After Marie Antoinette, I was over movies," she says, noting she was drained from the huge six-month shoot. "Then I met [cinematographer] Harris Savides, and he gave me a new outlook. He was really into doing things small and as simple as possible. He got me excited about making movies again, in a small-scale way."

The $8 million-plus Bling Ring is set in modern-day Calabasas, Calif., and tells the true story of a group of teens that embarked on a robbing spree, stealing money, jewelry and designer clothing from the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan before they were caught and then, in some cases, given prison sentences. The film mixes a cast of unknowns -- including Israel Broussard, Taissa Farmiga and Katie Chang. Leslie Mann and Harry Potter's former teenage witch, Emma Watson, were exceptions.

Watson, who spent weeks perfecting a Valley accent, was struck by her director's spontaneity during a six-week shoot that got under way in March 2011. "Once you are on set, she lets you be," she says. "She is very loose and free and calm."

Marvel Cliffhanger: Robert Downey Jr.'s $50 Million Sequel Showdown

Iron Man Report Item - H 2013

On May 6, Robert Downey Jr. and about 20 well-wishers settled into a private dinner at Spago organized by his wife and producing partner, Susan Downey. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige attended, as did Disney Studios head Alan Horn and director Shane Black.

The Monday night get-together ostensibly was to celebrate the amazing opening for Iron Man 3, which scored the second-highest domestic bow to date with $174.1?million (second only to Downey’s own The Avengers at $207.4?million). Internationally, where the movie opened earlier, the tally stood at $504.8?million for a worldwide total of $678.9?million after just 10 days.

But the meal also kicked off a crucial period for Disney, Marvel and Downey because the actor -- arguably the center of the mega-grossing Marvel movie universe -- is not signed for another turn as Tony Stark. Sources close to the dealmaking say Downey has entered negotiations to reprise his role in Marvel’s The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, the first of which has a May 1, 2015, release date and will cap what is known as Phase 2 of the Marvel movies in the same way 2012’s Avengers culminated the first Marvel wave that began with 2008’s Iron Man. Avengers 3 has no release date and probably will not hit screens at least until the end of Phase 3, in 2017.

PHOTOS: Robert Downey Jr. Travels the World for 'Iron Man 3'

But sources say Iron Man 4 has not been part of the discussions, and it’s unclear whether Downey, 48, wants to return for another stand-alone sequel.

Signing him for one or multiple movies won’t be cheap. When Iron Man became a surprise blockbuster, Downey’s CAA reps negotiated a deal to include what sources told THR in 2012 is a slice of Marvel’s first-dollar gross from every movie in which he plays the character. One source pegged that in the 5?percent to 7?percent range; Disney, Marvel and Downey’s reps declined comment. For Avengers, Downey’s pay zoomed past $50?million with box-office bonuses and backend, a number the actor confirmed in the June issue of GQ. “Isn’t that crazy? They are so pissed,” he said of Marvel. “I’m what’s known as a strategic cost.”

That strategic cost likely will be about the same for Iron Man 3. And it might go up if Marvel, led by the famously frugal Ike Perlmutter, wants Downey back. The numbers suggest Downey, far more than any other Marvel player, is worth his price. Despite success launching stand-alone franchises in Thor and Captain America, the fact is the Marvel movies in which Downey appears perform far better than those in which he doesn’t. Iron Man 2, for instance, outgrossed Thor by 39?percent and Captain America by 69?percent worldwide.

Thanks to the success of the Marvel movies and their ancillary revenue, analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen and Co. says the unit generates $400?million to $500?million in annual operating income, about 5 percent of Disney’s total haul. With taxes, Creutz believes Disney CEO Robert Iger’s $4.3?billion acquisition of the company in 2009 will have paid for itself in 15 years, far earlier than analysts first predicted. Even Paramount, whose right to distribute Iron Man 3 was bought out in the 2009 Disney deal, will earn more than $100?million if the film continues its trajectory, according to another analyst.

BEHIND THE SCREEN: Red Bull Skydiving Team Enlisted for 'Iron Man 3' Scene

Cruetz suggests a Downey departure could cost Marvel as much as 9?percent of its earnings in the near term. “It would be a definite negative for that particular franchise. "He is Tony Stark. The other individual franchises -- Thor, Captain America, Hulk -- etc., don’t have near the level of box-office potential that Iron Man does,” says Creutz. “The other way to look at it is that Iron Man would probably look more like those other franchises in terms of box-office performance without Downey.”

But Iron Man wouldn’t die if Downey left, nor would Avengers. Actors learned long ago that no one is irreplaceable. Batman and James Bond have been played by many men. Marvel has used three actors to play the Hulk (Eric Bana, Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo). Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle after the first Iron Man, and sources say Marvel has used the threat of recasting in negotiations with such franchise players as Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Evans. For its upcoming Phase 2 adventure movie Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel cast low-cost Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt to star and hired low-budget filmmaker James Gunn (Slither) to direct.

Even as Phase 2 gets under way with Iron Man 3 and sequels to Thor and Captain America, Marvel is working on Phase 3. Ant-Man, a project to be directed Edgar Wright, has a release date of Nov. 6, 2015. Beyond that, the company is tight-lipped about its plans. Marvel has a writing program it uses as a concept generator and has scripts for Blade and Ms. Marvel features, for example. Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Black Panther and The Runaways are other projects on the horizon. The company slowly has been reacquiring licenses to characters it lost during the 1990s, snapping up Blade, Ghost Rider, Power Man and Daredevil in the past year alone.

Still, a Phase 3 without Iron Man 4 might be a risk Marvel and Disney would rather not take. And Downey, who reinvented himself with the character after years of personal struggles, seems game for the challenge of being a 50-year-old superhero. “I don’t know,” he said April 30 on The Daily Show, adding with a wink, “I had a long contract with them, and now we’re gonna renegotiate.”

Howard Gordon's TNT Drama 'Legends' Gets Series Pickup

Legends Episodic - H 2013

TNT is going into business with the producers behind Emmy champ Homeland.

A day after green-lighting Michael Bay's naval drama The Last Ship to series, the Turner-owned network has picked up Howard Gordon's Legends to series. A premiere date for the 10-episode series has not yet been determined.

From Homeland executive producer Gordon, Legends -- which originally was for NBC -- follows deep-cover operative Martin Odum (Game of Thrones' Sean Bean), who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. But his own identity comes into question when a mysterious stranger suggests that Martin isn’t who he thinks he is.

Gordon, Jeffrey Nachmanoff (The Day After Tomorrow), Alexander Cary (Homeland) and Jonathan Levin (Charmed) developed the project based on the book from spy novelist Robert Littell. David Semel will direct and executive produce the Fox 21 project. Emmy nominees Ethan Reiff and Cy Voris (Sleeper Cell) will serve as showrunners and exec produce.

"Legends has everything you want in a good spy drama: intriguing characters, multi-layered plots, a terrific cast and lots of action and suspense," said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). "At the center of it all is Sean Bean, giving an outstanding performance in an extremely complex and difficult role. We are very excited to work with Howard Gordon and his fellow executive producers, who have put together a truly extraordinary drama."

Ali Larter, Rob Mayes, Tina Majorino, Steve Harris, Amber Valletta and Lux Haney Jardine co-star. Worth noting: Bean replaced Brendan Fraser, who was poised to make his series regular TV debut in the project but parted ways early during production.

For his part, Gordon also has pilots at FX (Tyrant, with director Ang Lee attached) and CBS (Anatomy of Violence, starring Skeet  Ulrich) awaiting word on their future in addition to the upcoming third season of Showtime's Homeland.

Legends is one of a handful of pilots in contention at the Turner-owned cable network. It joins recently picked-up The Last Ship and King and Maxwell as well as pilot Steven Bochco's Murder in the First. The series order comes about a week after TNT renewed Dallas for a third season. The fate of Monday Mornings and veteran Southland are expected to come shortly as Turner presents its upfront lineup to Madison Avenue.

Check out the trailer for Legends, below.

'Grey's Anatomy': Will Meredith and the Baby Survive? (Exclusive Video)

A massive storm is on its way to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and Owen is readying the troops with news that doesn't go over well with everyone.

In an exclusive look at Thursday's penultimate season nine episode, fittingly titled "Readiness is All," Owen (Kevin McKidd) warns his staff that the storm will bring with it scores of casualties and instructs surgeons to push, postpone or cancel all elective procedures until after the storm.

PHOTOS: The Couples of Shondaland: 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice,' 'Scandal'

Expecting mother Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) -- who is three weeks from her due date -- doesn't love the idea that she's going to have to scale back her work commitments. In an apparent rush to finish up in the OR, Mer takes a very scary tumble down the stairs that sends her heart racing.

"Meredith is basically giving birth in the last-worst situation you'd want to be giving birth," Grey's Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It's going to be not so pleasant for her. Ellen did really beautiful work and the story we told is really charged, interesting and strong. It's the last way you'd want anybody to ever have to have a baby and that's Meredith Grey. Things obviously don't come easy for Meredith Grey. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) possibly, maybe will be around (laughs)."

WikiLeaks Documentary Soundtrack Gets Release Date (Exclusive)

Fall On Your Sword Logo - H 2013

The soundtrack to Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney’s upcoming WiKiLeaks documentary will be available for digital download May 21, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks is from Universal Pictures’ Back Lot Music. It features a score from Fall on Your Sword, a Williamsburg-based film and commercial music production and audio post shop.

SUNDANCE REVIEW: We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks

“I've been a fan of Alex’s work for a long time, so it was great to finally work together on such an important project,” said Will Bates, founder of Fall on Your Sword. “Alex really wanted the music to have a cinematic edge to it. The score is very thematic and character-driven, like the film itself. Composing for a movie where the story was unfolding in real time was a unique experience.”

We Steal Secrets examines Julian Assange’s information sharing website, the role of secrecy in an instant-access world, and the plight of U.S. Army PFC Bradley Manning, who allegedly provided classified military documents later leaked by the site.

An unrelated WikiLeaks film, The Fifth Estate, is slated for a November release with Bill Condon directing and Benedict Cumberbatch playing Assange.

We Steal Secrets premiered at Sundance in January, and will be released by Focus World in New York and Los Angeles on May 24, followed by a release in select cities May 31. The doc will hit video on demand June 7.

Fall on Your Sword was launched in 2009 and has won a Cannes Golden Lions and two Clio Awards.

TV Pilots 2013: The Complete Guide

5 Netwroks Split - H 2013

Following a development season high on semi-autobiograpical fare, pilot season has continued that trend with several projects based on the lives of its creators. Elsewhere, established showrunners including Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly) and Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) are returning to the pilot pool with a single-mom comedy at CBS and an adaptation of Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D., respectively. Meanwhile, The CW and CBS are looking to launch spinoffs of established series The Vampire Diaries and NCIS: LA, respectively, while NBC is turning to Parenthood's Jason Katims to reboot the 2002 Hugh Grant movie About a Boy. For its part, Fox is looking to Parks and Recreation duo Mike Schur and Dan Goor to spice up its comedy offerings with a cop sitcom starring Andy Samberg.

These are a few of the highlights of Pilot Season 2013, where ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW sift through the numerous development projects and move forward in a bid to find the next breakout comedies and dramas. Here's a look at the pilots in contention for the 2013-14 television season, which The Hollywood Reporter will be updating throughout pilot and casting season, so be sure to bookmark the page and come back for the latest news.

(Note: Not included here are projects that already have landed series commitments and are set for summer, including CBS' adaptation of Stephen King's Under the Dome, among others.)
