"Glee" Star Darren Criss in Talks to 'Succeed' Daniel Radcliffe in 'How To' (Playbill)

Darren Criss, the heartthrob of TV's "Glee," is expected to realize a longtime dream of starring on Broadway. Playbill.com got independent confirmation that Criss is in talks with the producers of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying to take over for star Daniel Radcliffe when the latter's contract ends in January.

Criss — who plays Blaine Anderson, the head of the prep-school glee group The Warblers on Fox's "Glee" — would play at least a three-week run as corporate climber J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed and return to his TV and film obligations. Producers are seeking a third permanent-replacement Finch to carry on in late winter and spring.

A combination of summer tourists, Tony Awards exposure and the recent release of Radcliffe's final "Harry Potter" film have helped How to Succeed blossom at the box office at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre. For the week ending July 17, the production grossed a whopping $1,177,086, with an average ticket price of $107.

Insiders told Playbill.com Radcliffe is having such a good time in the show that he's not interested in a vacation before the end of the year.

Rob Ashford was 2011 Tony-nominated for his direction and choreography for the Frank Loesser-scored How to Succeed. It was also nominated as Best Musical Revival. John Larroquette won the Tony as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for playing the windy corporate chief who promotes the seemingly guileless Finch up the ladder.

Drogba takes malaria fight to native Africa (Reuters)

BANGKOK (Reuters) – After six years braving England's frigid winters, a tropical disease was the last thing Chelsea's injury-prone striker Didier Drogba thought would keep him on the sidelines of the Premier League.

Since contracting malaria last year, Drogba's fight against the disease has gone from the Chelsea treatment room to the wilds of West Africa, where he is building a hospital and providing thousands of mosquito nets in an effort to cut the infection rate of one of the world's biggest killers.

There are 225 million cases a year of malaria, a mosquito-borne disease which can damage the nervous system, kidneys and liver. There were 781,000 deaths due to malaria in 2009, nine out of 10 were in Africa, according to the World Health Organization.

"I had malaria, I know exactly what it feels like and it's something that I want to stop," Drogba told Reuters on Saturday, handing out hundreds of nets bearing his face to a foundation in Thailand during Chelsea's Asian tour.

"That's why we're giving these nets to kids and people who can't afford treatment. These are good options, they're efficient and they save lives."

Drogba has been active in his native Ivory Coast in raising funds and donating his own sponsorship earnings to building a hospital in the capital Abidjan worth more than $4 million.

The 32-year-old fell ill with malaria in September but continued playing, a decision he said was foolish in retrospect and delayed his recovery.

DANGEROUS MOVE

The towering forward still does not know where he picked up the illness, which the club did not reveal until two months later.

"It was very dangerous and cost me fitness for almost two months," he said. "But I kept playing, I wanted to help my team, but I really should not have."

Drogba's hospital project has been delayed due to a four-month conflict in Ivory Coast that killed thousands of people following an election intended to unite the former French colony that plunged it back into civil war.

The country is now in recovery following April's ouster by French-backed rebels of former President Laurent Gbagbo, who had refused to cede power. Drogba said he would return to his homeland in the next few weeks to get his hospital project started.

"The situation in Ivory Coast has meant it's difficult for people to receive treatment, but the country is trying to survive, slowly things should get back to normal," Drogba said.

"I want this money to go to the right place, to try to help my people and give back to them what they gave to me.

"They've always been supporting me, so I really want to help them."

Police: Singer Amy Winehouse dies at age 27 (AP)

By SYLVIA HUI and JILL LAWLESS, Associated Press Sylvia Hui And Jill Lawless, Associated Press – 5 mins ago

LONDON – Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27.

Winehouse shot to fame with the album "Back to Black," whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse — with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos — one of music's most recognizable stars.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.

An ambulance could be seen parked beneath the trees outside her London home, and the whole street was cordoned off by police tape. Officers kept onlookers away from the scene.

Last month, Winehouse canceled her European comeback tour after she swayed and slurred her way through barely recognizable songs in her first show in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Booed and jeered off stage, she flew home and her management said she would take time off to recover.

"I didn't go out looking to be famous," Winehouse told the Associated Press when "Back to Black" was released. "I'm just a musician."

But in the end, the music was overshadowed by fame, and by Winehouse's demons. Tabloids lapped up the erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics. Performances became shambling, stumbling train wrecks, watched around the world on the Internet.

Born in 1983 to taxi driver Mitch Winehouse and his pharmacist wife Janis, Winehouse grew up in the north London suburbs, and was set on a showbiz career from an early age. When she was 10, she and a friend formed a rap group, Sweet 'n' Sour — Winehouse was Sour — that she later described as "the little white Jewish Salt 'n' Pepa."

She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School, a factory for British music and acting moppets, later went to the Brit School, a performing arts academy in the "Fame" mold, and was originally signed to "Pop Idol" svengali Simon Fuller's 19 Management.

But Winehouse was never a packaged teen star, and always resisted being pigeonholed.

Her jazz-influenced 2003 debut album, "Frank," was critically praised and sold well in Britain. It earned Winehouse an Ivor Novello songwriting award, two Brit nominations and a spot on the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize.

But Winehouse soon expressed dissatisfaction with the disc, saying she was "only 80 percent behind" the album.

"Frank" was followed by a slump during which Winehouse broke up with her boyfriend, suffered a long period of writer's block and, she later said, smoked a lot of marijuana.

"I had writer's block for so long," she said in 2007. "And as a writer, your self-worth is literally based on the last thing you wrote. .. I used to think, 'What happened to me?'

"At one point it had been two years since the last record and (the record company) actually said to me, 'Do you even want to make another record?' I was like, 'I swear it's coming.' I said to them, 'Once I start writing I will write and write and write. But I just have to start it.'"

The album she eventually produced was a sensation.

Released in Britain in the fall of 2006, "Back to Black" brought Winehouse global fame. Working with producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi and soul-funk group the Dap-Kings, Winehouse fused soul, jazz, doo-wop and, above all, a love of the girl-groups of the early 1960s with lyrical tales of romantic obsession and emotional excess.

"Back to Black" was released in the United States in March 2007 and went on to win five Grammy awards, including song and record of the year for "Rehab."

Music critic John Aizlewood attributed her trans-Atlantic success to a fantastic voice and a genuinely original sound.

"A lot of British bands fail in America because they give America something Americans do better — that's why most British hip-hop has failed," he said. "But they won't have come across anything quite like Amy Winehouse."

Winehouse's rise was helped by her distinctive look — black beehive of hair, thickly lined cat eyes, girly tattoos — and her tart tongue.

She was famously blunt in her assessment of her peers, once describing Dido's sound as "background music — the background to death" and saying of pop princess Kylie Minogue, "she's not an artist ... she's a pony."

The songs on "Black to Black" detailed breakups and breakdowns with a similar frankness. Lyrically, as in life, Winehouse wore her heart on her sleeve.

"I listen to a lot of '60s music, but society is different now," Winehouse said in 2007. "I'm a young woman and I'm going to write about what I know."

Even then, Winehouse's performances were sometimes shambolic, and she admitted she is "a terrible drunk."

Increasingly, her personal life began to overshadow her career.

She acknowledged struggling with eating disorders and told a newspaper that she had been diagnosed as manic depressive but refused to take medication. Soon accounts of her erratic behavior, canceled concerts and drink- and drug-fueled nights began to multiply.

Photographs caught her unsteady on her feet or vacant-eyed, and she appeared unhealthily thin, with scabs on her face and marks on her arms.

There were embarrassing videos released to the world on the Internet. One showed an addled Winehouse and Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty playing with newborn mice. Another, for which Winehouse apologized, showed her singing a racist ditty to the tune of a children's song.

Winehouse's managers went to increasingly desperate lengths to keep the wayward star on the straight and narrow.

Though she was often reported to be working on new material, fans got tired of waiting for the much-promised followup to "Back to Black."

Occasional bits of recording saw the light of day. Her rendition of The Zutons' "Valerie" was a highlight of producer Mark Ronson's 2007 album "Version," and she recorded the pop classic "It's My Party" for the 2010 Quincy Jones album "Q: Soul Bossa Nostra."

But other recording projects with Ronson, one of the architects of the success of "Back to Black," came to nothing.

She also had run-ins with the law. In April 2008, Winehouse was cautioned by police for assault after she slapped a man during a raucous night out.

The same year she was investigated by police, although not charged, after a tabloid newspaper published a video that appeared to show her smoking crack cocaine.

In 2010, Winehouse pleaded guilty to assaulting a theater manager who asked her to leave a family Christmas show because she'd had too much to drink. She was given a fine and a warning to stay out of trouble by a judge who praised her for trying to clean up her act.

In May 2007 in Miami, she married music industry hanger-on Blake Fielder-Civil, but the honeymoon was brief. That November, Fielder-Civil was arrested for an attack on a pub manager the year before. Fielder-Civil later pleaded guilty to assaulting barman James King and then offering him 200,000 pounds (US$400,000) to keep quiet about it.

Winehouse stood by "my Blake" throughout his trial, often blowing kisses at him from the court's public gallery and wearing a heart-shaped pin labeled "Blake" in her hair at concerts. But British newspapers reported extramarital affairs while Fielder-Civil was behind bars.

They divorced in 2009.

Winehouse's health often appeared fragile. In June 2008 and again in April 2010, she was taken to hospital and treated for injuries after fainting and falling at home.

Her father said she had developed the lung disease emphysema from smoking cigarettes and crack, although her spokeswoman later said Winehouse only had "early signs of what could lead to emphysema."

She left the hospital to perform at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park in June 2008, and at the Glastonbury festival the next day, where she received a rousing reception but scuffled with a member of the crowd. Then it was back to a London clinic for treatment, continuing the cycle of music, excess and recuperation that marked her career.

William Shatner says success "eluded" him (Reuters)

SAN DIEGO (TheWrap) – William Shatner, the man who will forever be known as Capt. Kirk, and he of seemingly healthy ego, had a confession to make at Comic-Con: He doesn't consider himself a success.

At the geekathon to plug his new project, "The Captains," he worked in a mention of his third autobiography and forthcoming album of cover songs themed to space exploration, "Seeking Major Tom."

Nonetheless, he noted, with a proper dose of gravitas, that a question about his success was inapt.

"It's always eluded me trying to find success," he said.

Shatner, whose Google+ account was briefly suspended, perhaps on suspicion a pretender had been using it, mentioned that he will cover "Bohemian Rhapsody" on his album.

"The Captains," a project funded by and debuting today on the striving multi-platform network Epix (a Paramount/Lionsgate/MGM consortium), straightforwardly features interviews with past commanders of the pop-culture's longtime favorite rocket ship. They include Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Chris Pine, Avery Brooks and Scott Bakula.

The latter two were present for a rather sedate panel discussion. Shatner told the audience that he initially had trouble coming up with the airfare to conduct his many one-on-one interviews for the project, until the head of the Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier told him, "I'm an aeronautical engineer because of 'Star Trek.'"

Then the star began riding around in small jets, the Comic-Con crowd was left to imagine, like a Congressman on the take.

Bakula praised Shatner for putting his ego aside during interviews.

"He wasn't trying to be the star of this--just doing an interview," the star of the recently canceled "Men of a Certain Age" said.

Sony wants subpoena for Jackson footage quashed (AP)

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY, AP Entertainment Writer Anthony Mccartney, Ap Entertainment Writer – Fri Jul 22, 8:23 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – Sony studios on Friday asked the judge hearing Michael Jackson's manslaughter trial to throw out a subpoena for footage of the singer's final rehearsals after a defense attorney said earlier this week that reviewing them was "a big waste of time."

Attorneys for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which has footage from the "This Is It" film depicting Jackson's last rehearsals, argue in a motion that neither prosecutors nor defense attorneys should be able to show the footage during the trial.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor is scheduled to consider the request on Monday, but canceled plans to review the outtakes over the weekend. In a ruling, he stated that he had watched some of the 16 hours that attorneys were considering presenting to jurors, but that he would not travel to Sony studios for additional viewings on Saturday and Sunday.

The studio based its motion on quotes defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan made after a hearing Wednesday in which he said the footage doesn't show the singer was in poor health in the days before he died. Flanagan represents Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to an involuntary manslaughter charge related to Jackson's death.

"We believe his health is somewhat compromised, but he's not displaying it," Flanagan told reporters, including The Associated Press. He added that he thought the footage was irrelevant to the trial.

"I really think it's a big waste of time," he said.

Sony seized on the statement in its motion, writing, "If the enterprise is a waste of time, the court has stated that it has little time to be wasted."

Flanagan did not immediately return a phone message Friday afternoon.

Defense attorneys had been hoping the unseen footage from "This Is It" would support their contention that Jackson was frail in the days before his June 25 death.

Prosecutors found the footage helpful to their case, and asked Pastor to allow them to use up to 12 hours of raw footage. Murray's team wanted to show up to four hours from the rehearsals.

Jury selection in Murray's trial is scheduled to begin on Sept. 8.

Arnie's son injured in 'scary' surfing accident (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Arnold Schwarzenegger's 13-year-old son with estranged wife Maria Shriver is recovering after being seriously injured in a surfing accident, the couple said Friday, describing it as "scary."

Christopher Schwarzenegger has been in intensive care since suffering broken bones and a collapsed lung in the boogie-boarding accident in Malibu last weekend, according to People magazine and the TMZ celebrity news website.

"A few days ago, our son Christopher suffered an accident at the beach," former California governor and movie star Schwarzenegger and Shriver said in a joint statement.

"While it has been a very scary week, Christopher is surrounded by his family and friends. He is a brave boy and is expected to make a full recovery."

A source told People magazine that the teenager had been in intensive care since last Sunday, adding: "Maria has not left his side and is sleeping at hospital." TMZ said his condition has been upgraded during the week.

Former bodybuilder and politician Schwarzenegger, who put his film comeback on hold after announcing a split from his wife in May, has visited his son in hospital as well, said TMZ.

The injured teenager's 17-year-old brother Patrick tweeted: "Thank you everyone for your messages about my brother. This kid is strongest kid I ever seen. Keep praying."

"Thank you guys for ur concern and prayers for my baby brother! He's a tough little guy and getting better! Please keep praying for him!" added his older sister Katherine Schwarzenegger, on her Twitter account.

The accident was revealed a day after it emerged that Schwarzenegger is refusing financial support to Shriver once the couple, reported to be worth $400 million jointly, are divorced.

Shriver filed for divorce three weeks ago citing "irreconcilable differences" with her husband, whom she married in 1986, following his admission in May that he fathered a child with the couple's housekeeper.

In filings to the Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, Schwarzenegger said he would refuse spousal support, while seeking joint custody of their two minor children, Patrick and Christopher.

The Austrian-born former bodybuilder, a liberal Republican, had left office in January, and started to return to show business, with plans for a "Governator" comic book and animated TV show.

But he put his comeback on hold in May, telling his agents that "all his motion picture projects currently underway or being negotiated (should) stop planning until further notice."

Memorial service planned for British artist Freud (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – A memorial service will be held for realist painter Lucian Freud after a private family funeral, his lawyer said Saturday.

Freud, a grandson of Sigmund Freud, the inventor of modern psychoanalysis, was widely seen as Britain's top contemporary artist. He died peacefully in London on Wednesday, aged 88.

Freud was known for his signature nudes and self-portraits such as the powerful 1993 work of himself as a naked older man waving his brush like a weapon.

In recent years his paintings have sold for astronomical sums. His 1995 portrait "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping" fetched 33.6 million dollars at a Christie's auction in New York -- a world record for a living artist.

His lawyer Diana Rawstron said: "The funeral will be private and for the family only. There will be a memorial service at a date to be announced."

No date has been set for either event.

Sue Tilley, who posed nude for "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping", said she cried when she heard the news of Freud's death.

The artist gave her several etchings, which are potentially worth a small fortune, but Tilley said: "Money's not really important. Don't you think in life sometimes experience is more important than financial gain? Because of this painting I've had fantastic experiences."

The portrait is typical of Freud's warts-and-all style, but Tilley said she watched the work being created and so was not surprised by it.

"I saw it all the time because it's so huge, you would see it while he was painting it. He's not behind it, so it's in front of you the whole time, so I got very much used to it," she told BBC television.

Born to architect Ernst Freud, Sigmund's youngest son, in Berlin in 1922, Lucian moved to England with his family aged 10 to escape Nazism and became a British citizen in 1933.

His art career was interrupted when he served as a merchant seaman in an Atlantic convoy in 1941.

After an early flirtation with surrealism, Freud turned to portrait painting, particularly nudes, in the 1950s.

Singer Amy Winehouse found dead (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – Troubled singer Amy Winehouse, known for her smoky soul voice and her struggle with drink and drugs, has been found dead at her flat in north London, police said. She was 27 years old.

The Grammy award-winning soul singer with her trademark beehive battled with well-documented addictions that she documented in her hit single "Rehab". Her death is being treated as unexplained, Scotland Yard said.

"Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square shortly before 4:05 pm (1505 GMT) today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased," a police statement said.

"On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."

London Ambulance Service said it had been called to the flat at 3:54 pm (1454 GMT) and sent two ambulances.

Police officers remained on duty outside her home Saturday.

There was no immediate comment from her agents.

Winehouse rocketed to fame after winning five Grammy awards off the back of her 2006 second album "Back to Black" and the hit single "Rehab".

In the run-up to her live return, Winehouse spent a week earlier this year at an addiction treatment clinic in London, reportedly at the suggestion of her father, Mitch, over concerns that she was drinking too much before her shows.

But Winehouse pulled out of her European comeback tour following a disastrous opening performance in Serbia on June 18.

She was booed at the performance in Belgrade, as she appeared to be too drunk to sing.

Some 20,000 people gathered for the highly-promoted concert at the sixth-century Kalemegdan fortress, but many soon left.

During the concert, which lasted about 90 minutes, Winehouse could only mumble some of the lyrics, failing to follow her band.

Winehouse left the stage twice, with many fans showing their displeasure despite her band's attempts to calm the crowd.

"Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances," a statement from her representatives said.

"Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

She had also been scheduled to perform in Istanbul, Athens, Bilbao in Spain, Locarno in Switzerland, Italy's Lucca festival, Switzerland's Paleo Festival in Nyon, Nova Jazz and Blues Night in Wiesen, Austria, and Poland's Bydgoszcz Artpop Festival.

Known for her distinctive voice and beehive hairdo, Winehouse's debut album "Frank" was released in 2003 and brought her wide acclaim. It went triple platinum in Britain.

The follow-up, "Back to Black", was a worldwide smash hit, reaching number one in Britain and number two in the US charts. It went six times platinum in Britain and double platinum in the United States.

She married Blake Fielder-Civil in Miami in May 2007 but they had a tempestuous relationship. He spent part of their marriage behind bars for a vicious attack on a pub landlord and a subsequent attempt to cover it up.

They divorced in July 2009.

Andrew Garfield calls Spider-Man a role for life (Reuters)

By R.T. Watson R.t. Watson – Sat Jul 23, 1:18 am ET

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – He may change his mind later, but right now Andrew Garfield says the role of comic book superhero Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot of the hit film franchise is a part that could last a lifetime.

"I could play this character for the rest of my life," an enthusiastic Garfield, 27, told Reuters at Comic-Con on Friday, where the first few clips of the film were revealed to fans.

Comic-Con International, an event where tens of thousands of fans of comics and science-fiction stories gather annually, has become a major launch pad for Hollywood studios promoting movies, and the makers of "The Amazing Spider-Man" delighted them on Friday with a look at its new crime fighter, Garfield.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" will land in theaters in 2012, and it has been pitched to fans of Peter Parker -- a.k.a. Spider-Man -- as a franchise reboot that takes the boy back to his roots as a gawky teenager who acquires the web-spinning capabilities and super strength of a spider.

The first three movies, starting with 2002's "Spider-Man" and directed by Sam Raimi, took in a whopping $2.5 billion worldwide, but the makers decided that to continue thrilling loyal fans, the franchise needed a fresh start.

So, they hired the little-known Garfield (who since then made a name for himself in Facebook film "The Social Network) to portray Parker and director Marc Webb (independent film "500 Days of Summer") to breathe new life into the series.

"I think Marc wanted to make it as authentic as possible ... what happens to this kid? What happens to a kid if he really truly gets these superpowers? But also what the real struggle it is to be a teenager" Garfield told Reuters.

The new star got off to an impressive start at a Comic-Con panel for the upcoming movie. He posed as a rogue fanboy dressed in a Spider-man costume and stood in the audience at a microphone where fans ask questions of stars on stage.

"Peter Parker has inspired me to be stronger," he read from a piece of paper. "He inspired Andrew, me, to be braver."

Then, Garfield delivered a line worthy of any comic book character who had been helped by the amazing boy with spider-like attributes.

"He saved my life," Garfield said.

And the Comic-Con crowd was caught in his sticky web.

Whether "The Amazing Spider-Man" can save the franchise in theaters awaits next year's film release, but there is a precedent for success.

When Warner Bros. wanted to revive its Batman film franchise, the studio hired Christopher Nolan -- at the time a relatively little-known director of hit indie movie "Insomnia" -- to direct 2005's "Batman Begins."

The result of the reboot? "Batman Begins" was a smash hit that led to another blockbuster, "The Dark Knight," and a third movie in the works.

Garfield knows that the pressure to perform is on him and Webb to do the same for Spider-Man.

"This is really a lot of responsibility," he told Reuters, "and I feel the responsibility of the symbol I was given to portray."

Colin Farrell opens up during `Fright Night' panel (AP)

By SANDY COHEN, AP Entertainment Writer Sandy Cohen, Ap Entertainment Writer – Fri Jul 22, 11:26 pm ET

SAN DIEGO – Colin Farrell plays a vampire in his latest film, but he says almost any role will do: He just loves being an actor.

The 35-year-old opened up during a panel featuring the update of "Fright Night" Friday at the Comic-Con fan convention.

When a fan asked whether he preferred his earlier starring roles or his more recent character parts, Farrell said that in the last six years, he "reconnected with the mystery of the whole thing and the imagination of the whole thing and how much fun it is to be an actor."

"I came to success really quickly in relation to most other actors," he said. "The idea of how fast the chaos around me took grip, it's insane. And I, myself personally, I lost sight of why I went to my first acting class when I was 17 in Dublin ... I lost sight of that through this good fortune I was experiencing in Hollywood. So in the last six years I reconnected with the Colin who was 17.

"It's a lot of fun to do what we do. It's such a fortunate place to find yourself," he said.

He plays the vampire-next-door Jerry Dandrige in "Fright Night," a reimagining of the 1985 horror classic that's set for release Aug. 19.

Farrell took the stage again later in the day for a panel about the reboot of "Total Recall." He plays Doug Quaid, the same role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 original.

Farrell's description of his character's arc echoes what the actor has experienced in his own life: "I loved the idea of a man journeying from being a man in a deep, deep slumber to consciousness," he said.

He described his character's battle in the film as one between the intellectual and the emotional.

"Total Recall" director Len Wiseman said that while his version is totally different from the first film, it also draws from the original source material: Philip K. Dick's story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale."

Besides Farrell, the film stars Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, John Cho and Kate Beckinsale. It is set for release next summer.

Comic-Con continues through Sunday at the San Diego Convention Center.

UK "Rehab" singer Winehouse found dead: report (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – British singer Amy Winehouse, whose hit single "Rehab" became the anthem for troubled celebrity culture, has been found dead at her home in north London, Sky News reported on Saturday.

Police said they had found the body of a 27-year-old woman at a home in Camden Square, north London, after being called by ambulance services around 1500 GMT (11 a.m. EDT).

"Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death at this early stage. It is being treated as unexplained," a police spokesman said. A spokesman for the singer could not immediately confirm she had died.

Police had cordoned off the leafy street outside Winehouse's home in Camden, where around 20 onlookers had already gathered along with media photographers and camera crew.

Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, to a Jewish family with a history of jazz musicians. She was discovered by soul singer Tyler James at the age of 16 and in 2003 her debut album "Frank" was released, to general acclaim.

Her second album "Back to Black" was released in October 2006 and reached the No. 1 spot.

The album's hit single "Rehab" contained the line: "They tried to make me go to rehab. I said 'no, no, no.'"

Beyonce says Eastwood film makes her day (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Beyonce Knowles has had it all before turning 30, yet is still humbled by what she calls "the biggest opportunity of my life" -- the lead role in Clint Eastwood's remake of the film, "A Star Is Born."

The singer and burgeoning actress, whose fourth solo album "4" debuted at No. 1 on pop charts after its release in June, told Reuters she felt lucky to have landed the iconic role previously played by Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland.

Eastwood will helm the fourth remake of the story about rising singer and actress Esther Blodgett, and Beyonce fondly remembers being a young girl and watching previous versions of the movie with her mother.

"It's when I became a fan of Barbra Streisand's. And I then saw Judy Garland's version of 'A Star Is Born' and I realized every 20 to 30 years a new star is born and a new talent represents that generation and era -- so I didn't think that I would ever get the opportunity to be the star," she said.

Beyonce has won 16 Grammy Awards, is married to rapper mogul Jay-Z, has topped Forbes magazine's lists of the most powerful and influential celebrities and is one of the world's top-grossing musicians. She starred in other movies with large ensemble casts, such as the widely-praised "Dreamgirls", but she said meeting Oscar winner Eastwood still made her quiver.

"I met with Clint and I was so nervous and I know that it is the biggest opportunity of my life. I will work as hard as I can," she said. "Because I can't wait. And I am so happy that he trusts me and I am in good hands and I am so fortunate."

The film is due to begin shooting at the end of the year and, according to showbiz website Deadline Hollywood, may also co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. But for now, Beyonce is still busy managing the singing career that she has taken over from her father and longtime manager, Matthew Knowles.

The switch has the music industry watching closely. Without directly addressing her father, Beyonce said it was "difficult balancing the business and the creativity."

"Having to balance the two is really hard and really making sure that I'm still doing my job, which is to be the performer and the entertainer and not have to do everyone else's job so that mine doesn't suffer, that's been a challenge," she said.

She added: "I'm sleeping with my blackberry, I'm having dreams that I'm answering e-mails, like it's that far!"

LABOR OF LOVE

While "4," debuted at No. 1, its first week sales were her lowest to date and singles "Run the World (Girls)" and "Best Thing I Never Had" have not performed as well as other hits, from "Crazy In Love" on her first album to her third CD's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "Halo."

The Houston-born singer, who first experienced fame with the all-girl group "Destiny's Child," said that with "4" she wanted to make a cohesive album that was "one body of work."

"This album was a labor of love. It was not about singles," she said. "I felt like the emotion and live instruments and just soul (were) missing out of the music industry, especially the popular music that's out. I wanted to bring it back to the music I grew up listening to. It's like a mixture of the '90s and the '70s and rock-n-roll."

Beyonce heralds the video for "Run the World (Girls)" as a current favorite, but acknowledges that the black-and-white video for "Single Ladies," which showed off her swinging pelvis and rhythmic dance moves in a one-piece bodysuit, was a hard act to follow.

That video "was something that no one knew would become the phenomenon it became, thank God. And I know I am so lucky to have one of those moments in my career. It is just a blessing."

Her move to take charge of her career -- everything from her tour performances to videos -- is partly aimed at inspiring younger stars to take control of their careers, she said, citing one of her major influences, Michael Jackson.

"It just feels like no one else can tell me how I am supposed to perform, and I think it's what separates the Michaels and the Madonnas from the artists that are great but are just not quite the Michaels and the Madonnas," Beyonce said.

While some industry watchers have wondered if success has gone to her head, Beyonce seems to exhibit very little of the ego of many pop stars and said as the years progress, she will likely be living "vicariously" through other artists.

As she turns 30 years-old in September, what can she possibly achieve by, say, 60?

"I am sure at 60 I will not doing the Oh-Oh-Oh dance, that will not be cute," she laughed, referring to the 'Single Ladies' dance. "I think my priority will be my children and hopefully my grandchildren by then -- and my record label or production company or whatever else."

Comic-Con draws out party animals (AP)

By DERRIK J. LANG, AP Entertainment Writer Derrik J. Lang, Ap Entertainment Writer – Fri Jul 22, 5:18 pm ET

SAN DIEGO – During the day, Comic-Con attendees drool over intricate costumes, limited-edition toys, celebrity appearances and never-before-seen footage. At night, they party.

This year's annual pop-culture extravaganza is playing host to more over-the-top evening events than ever — from lavish, invite-only, A-list soirees to costumed freak shows.

"I've done this enough to know there are two Comic-Cons," said Kevin Pereira, host and producer of cable channel G4's "Attack of the Show." "There are two entirely different conventions going on. People have two schedules. One is for the panel-goers who want to buy limited-edition merchandise and see an ex-cast member of `Firefly,' and then there's the nighttime crowd."

Pereira, a Comic-Con veteran and self-described "D-list celebrity," said he's been invited to more parties this year than in previous years. How does he decide which ones to R.S.V.P. to attend? He checks the guest list. Pereira said the best part of Comic-Con is "being able to rub elbows" with pop-culture luminaries like Stan Lee and "the people on my DVR."

Movie studios, television networks, video game publishers and other entertainment companies are reaching deep into their coffers to host peripheral Comic-Con events at nearby hotels, bars, restaurants and — in some cases — parking lots in hopes of garnering hype in the increasingly crowded marketplace.

"It's kind of like the Olympics for us," said Letty Canizalez, Hard Rock Hotel sales manager. "It's all hands on deck for our staff. We plan for this a year out, and as soon as this year is over, we'll be getting calls for next year. We sell out our venues very, very early, but the studios don't usually tell us any details until the very, very end."

The Hard Rock Hotel, which is located just a few steps away from the Comic-Con madness inside the San Diego Convention Center, is home to more than 20 events this year in various spaces throughout the hotel. Canizalez believes there are more parties being thrown during this year's Comic-Con because "everyone's purse strings opened a little more than last year."

The hotel played host to several soirees Thursday, including a boozy showcase by Microsoft Corp. of upcoming games such as "Gears of War 3," a well-attended poolside bash thrown by pop-culture site IGN and sponsored by the video game "Saint's Row: The Third," and an intimate candlelit celebration honoring the work of Robert Rodriguez and Frank Frazetta.

In a parking lot down the street, cast members from the upcoming horror flick "Final Destination 5" partied at a fun no-frills bash complete with boxed wine and air hockey tables. Around the corner, Todd McFarlane was toasted for contributing to the role-playing game "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" at a low-key cocktail party overlooking PETCO Park.

Festivities planned for Friday included the exclusive Maxim, FX and Fox Home Entertainment party on the rooftop of Hotel Solamar and the Warner Bros. Television event at the Hard Rock Hotel. Syfy and E! have joined forces for a star-studded soiree at Hotel Solamar on Saturday, while Entertainment Weekly will take over the pool at the Hard Rock Hotel.

"I feel like this is one of the best parties we throw throughout the year," said Lisa Simpson, special projects editor at Entertainment Weekly. "It makes perfect sense because we're all about pop culture and Comic-Con is all about pop culture. This year will be really fun because we'll have fun stuff like liquid nitrogen ice cream and a slider station."

Most parties aren't open to the more than 130,000 guests expected to pack the convention center, though Comic-Con badge holders can line up to attend Saturday's 37th annual Masquerade, a showcase for costumed attendees. And anyone can participate Saturday in the fifth annual Zombie Walk, a march of undead-dressed folks through the city's Gaslamp Quarter.

Queen spooked by Catherine's wedding dress display (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly described as "creepy" a new exhibition featuring the wedding dress worn by the former Kate Middleton when she married Prince William in April.

The Alexander McQueen dress is being exhibited on a headless mannequin in the ballroom at Buckingham Palace, with the tiara and veil that the now Duchess of Cambridge wore, suspended above it.

During a private tour with her new granddaughter-in-law before the exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, the queen was heard to say "horrible" and "horrid" as she stood in front of the dress.

"It's made to look very creepy," said the monarch, while Catherine responded that it had a "3D effect", according to a reporter from Britain's Press Association news agency who was there.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "This was part of a private conversation between the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge and we do not comment on private conversations".

The dress, designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, is made of ivory and white satin-gazar (stiffened organza) and will be on display as part of the summer exhibition at the palace, which runs until October 3.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to flock to see the gown following huge interest in the April 29 wedding at Westminster Abbey, which was watched by an estimated two billion people worldwide.

1940s actress Linda Christian dies (AFP)

ROME (AFP) – Linda Christian, a 1940s Hollywood actress nicknamed "anatomic bomb" by Life magazine for her stunning looks and famous for her marriage to actor Tyrone Power, has died aged 87, her daughter said here Saturday.

Romina Power told journalists in Rome that her mother, who had been suffering from colon cancer, died in Palm Springs on Friday.

Born in 1923 in Mexico, Christian -- whose real name was Blanca Rosa Henrietta Stella Welter Vorhauer -- was known for playing Mara in the last Tarzan film starring Johnny Weissmuller in 1948.

She was also the first James Bond girl in the 1954 television adaptation of "Casino Royale".

But she was perhaps most famous for her seven-year marriage to 20th Century Fox star Tyrone Power, with whom she had two children.

Thousands of people flocked to Rome to celebrate their wedding in 1949 in the Santa Francesca Romana church, a stone's throw from the Colosseum. The newlyweds were later received by Pope Pius XII.

After Power's death, Linda Christian married the English actor Edmund Purdom.

Conan O'Brien unveils "The Flaming C" (Reuters)

SAN DIEGO (TheWrap) – The other members of Pale Force are going to be awfully jealous: Conan O'Brien unveiled his new superhero alter-ego during Warner Bros.' Comic-Con panel Friday for "Green Lantern: The Animated Series."

Despite a sleek trailer, "The Flaming C," may not actually hit the big screen. The trailer says it's "Coming Soon -- Maybe."

And while it's encouraging that the creators of "Batman: The Animated Series" worked on the trailer, the Masturbating Bear's apparent involvement isn't a good sign.

Warner Bros. says the Flaming C -- who seems a lot tougher than O'Brien's Pale Force alter-ego, despite wearing oven mitts -- is the result of a brief meeting between O'Brien and "Batman" animator Bruce Timm, executive producer of "Green Lantern: The Animated Series."

David Hasselhoff swaps life with namesake for TV show (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Everyone knows David Hasselhoff, right? The acting, singing former "Baywatch" star with a 30-year Hollywood career.

Think again. David Haseloff is a 27 year-old electrical technician and landscaper from a small Texas town who has never set foot in Los Angeles. That is, he never had until TV producers with their next big idea came calling.

Hasselhoff and Haseloff -- the latter has only one "s" in his surname -- trade lives and lifestyles for the first episode of the new CBS television series "Same Name", starting on Sunday.

Boxer Mike Tyson, comedienne Kathy Griffin and football star Reggie Bush are some of the other celebrities who trade places with their little-known namesakes in later episodes for the cross between "Wife Swap" and "The Simple Life".

Hasselhoff, 59, saw the program as a chance to show people the real man behind the TV image. As am electrical technician and landscaper, he gets to put his muscled physique to good use with several days of manual labor in Lake Jackson, Texas, and several nights of broken sleep caused by his namesake's young baby.

"When you are a David Hasselhoff, or a Bruce Willis or a Brad Pitt, people get a view of us from what we do on TV, or from the press," the actor told Reuters.

"So when I got an opportunity to go to Texas -- where a lot of my family lives -- I thought I would love to meet some other Hasselhoffs and see if they have the same values as we do. We are a very close family, and we have a lot of respect for the work ethic," he added.

THE HOLLYWOOD LIFE

The Texas Haseloff, who has had a lifetime of being teased about his name, got the keys to a Beverly Hills mansion, several flashy cars, the services of the actor's housekeeper, agent, bodyguard, personal trainer and personal assistant, and a night out in Los Angeles entertaining the David Hasselhoff fan club.

"I never thought being a celebrity would be so hard," he says on the show, adding that he previously imagined that stars simply sat around their mansions all day. "It's been fun but I have no desire to be a celebrity."

Away from the limelight, former "Knight Rider" star Hasselhoff is both awed by his new family's struggles to make ends meet and elated to meet dozens of assorted cousins, grandparents, uncles and children who share his famous name.

Hasselhoff said the swap was an eye-opening experience for both sides. But he added; "My conception of their life was not nearly as surprising as their conception of my life."

"They were surprised at all the travel, all the hard work, the boot camps, the voice classes, the agents and managers, the bad press, the good press, the stuff you have to endure in this business."

Although the two families changed lives for just a week, they appear to have formed a more lasting bond. Hasselhoff presented the family with several lasting mementos and tickets to one of his concerts in Germany, and he said the two men remain in touch.

"The paychecks are different but the bills are the same and the values and the hard work is the same. They are working for their family over there, and I keep hustling and working and reinventing myself for my kids," Hasselhoff said.

Search for dad sets Spidey on superhero course (AP)

SAN DIEGO – It's not just a random mutant spider bite that sets Hollywood's new Peter Parker on the superhero career track.

From the trailer of "The Amazing Spider-Man" and footage previewed Friday at the Comic-Con fan convention, it's clear that something dark and deep is at the heart of Peter's fateful encounter with that spider. He may even be a Spider-Man of destiny.

The footage offers glimpses of the orphan boy's natural father (Campbell Scott), a man shrouded in a mystery that Peter (Andrew Garfield) needs to unravel as a youth.

Garfield, co-star Emma Stone and director Marc Webb would not divulge details, but they did acknowledge that a personal quest puts Peter on a collision course with the spider whose bite imparts superpowers.

"I love the idea of destiny having a hand in Peter Parker's fortune, and not just being a slip and a fall," Garfield said in an interview. "I love the idea of him being meant to assume this symbol."

Due in theaters in July 2012, "The Amazing Spider-Man" maintains the classic Parker family structure of the Marvel Comics and the three previous big-screen blockbusters that starred Tobey Maguire as Peter. Garfield's Peter is raised by his upright Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and loving Aunt May (Sally Field).

In Maguire's version, a school field trip took Peter to the lab where that spider gave him the momentous nip. In the new film, Peter's on a mission when fate strikes.

"There's a lot that leads him to that spider bite in this one," Stone said. "It's not just a school field trip. He snuck in there for some reason."

The film just finished shooting a few weeks ago, but Sony Pictures showed some significant portions of footage setting up Peter's transformation into the web-slinging hero, along with the mutation of a one-armed scientist (Rhys Ifans) into a hulking green villain known as the Lizard.

Though Scott as Peter's father appears only briefly, the footage indicates that his character is pivotal to the fortunes of his son.

"It's about a kid who goes out looking for his father, and he finds himself," Webb said. "I don't want to get too specific beyond that, but that's certainly a big part of what the story's about, my angle on the Peter Parker character. The fact that he's sort of an orphan, I think that's something really interesting to explore."

SARAJEVO | Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:32pm EDT

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - The Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) opened late on Friday honoring jailed Iranian film director Jafar Panahi whose directorial debut launched the first SFF 17 years ago in an act of defiance against the 1992-95 war.

The SFF was founded close to the end of a 43-month siege of the city by the Bosnian Serb forces, and has grown into the largest film gathering in the Balkans.

"The first festival was opened with Panahi's White Balloon under extremely difficult conditions but with incredible enthusiasm and a dream of freedom," said festival director Mirsad Purivatra.

"This amazing artist continues to remind us of the importance of freedom and artistic creativity, which is exactly what created the Sarajevo Film Festival in 1995," he said presenting a special Heart of Sarajevo Award to Panahi.

Panahi was arrested last year and accused of making a film without permission and inciting opposition protests after the 2009 Iranian election. He was jailed in December for six years and banned for 20 years from filmmaking, writing or any other form of artistic work.

Winner of many international awards and a supporter of Iranian opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi in the disputed presidential vote, Panahi was also banned from traveling abroad for 20 years. The film community strongly condemned his conviction.

"For the last six months I have been waiting for the final sentence to be delivered, and this limbo status is no better than being in jail," Panahi said in a letter to SFF organizers as he awaits the verdict of a court appeal.

"For a filmmaker, when filmmaking is made impossible, living under any given condition is imprisonment," he said and expressed a hope that he would be able to attend SFF once again.

The SFF acts as a major showcase for East European films. This year it will show more than 200 movies during the nine-day event.

Nine feature films from the region, spreading from Austria in the West to Turkey in the East, of which SFF helped produce three, will compete for the 25,000 euro ($36,060) Heart of Sarajevo Award.

Every year SFF hosts about 100,000 film fans, many from neighboring countries and hoteliers and tourism officials say that nearly all accommodation was booked up.

The most famous guests this year will be German film director Wim Wenders, British actress Charlotte Rampling and Hollywood star Michael Fassbender.

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:38pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The 13-year-old son of former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his estranged wife, Maria Shriver, was injured in a beach accident days ago, leading to a "very scary week" for the family, they said in a statement on Friday.

The statement gave few details of the mishap involving Christopher Schwarzenegger, the youngest of the couple's four children, nor did it say how badly he was hurt.

But the celebrity news website TMZ.com reported the youth was severely injured when hit by a large wave while surfing or boogie-boarding last weekend in Malibu, suffering multiple broken bones and a collapsed lung.

According to TMZ, the boy initially was hospitalized in intensive care, but his condition has since been upgraded.

His parents said their son is expected to make a full recovery.

"While it has been a very scary week, Christopher is surrounded by his family and friends," the couple's statement said.

"We want to sincerely thank the paramedics and lifeguards who responded so swiftly, as well as the doctors, nurses, emergency room and hospital staff who have cared for our son. They have been extraordinary to him and to us."

Shriver filed for divorce from Schwarzenegger on July 1, weeks after the Austrian-born former bodybuilder and film star publicly admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock with a member of the family's household staff more than a decade earlier. Schwarzenegger and Shriver had separated in May.

Shriver, a daughter of the Kennedy political dynasty, gave up her career as a network television journalist when she became California's first lady at the start of Schwarzenegger's two terms as governor. She has requested spousal support and joint custody of all their children.

Schwarzenegger's attorney filed court papers on Wednesday seeking suspension of court-ordered spousal support to Shriver and requesting that she pay her own legal fees, according to legal documents obtained by Reuters.

Two of Christopher's siblings, Katherine, 21, and Patrick, 17, posted messages of support for their younger brother on Twitter on Friday.

"This kid is strongest kid I ever seen (sic). Keep praying," wrote Patrick, while Katherine wrote: "He's a tough little guy and getting better!"

TIGRE, Argentina | Fri Jul 22, 2011 5:10pm EDT

TIGRE, Argentina (Reuters) - Oscar-nominated actor Viggo Mortensen, best known as Aragorn in the "Lord of the Rings" films, says he never felt as comfortable as he does now while shooting his first Argentine film in the country where he was raised.

The Danish-American actor lived until age 11 in Argentina, where he learned fluent Spanish and developed a fanatical devotion to the San Lorenzo soccer club. He returns often to the South American country, where he says he feels at home.

"I've been in lots of shoots, more than 40 movies, but I've never felt this comfortable," Mortensen told Reuters on the set of his new film, "Todos Tenemos un Plan" ("Everybody has a Plan").

"In 'Lord of the Rings' we were working together for years so there was a bond created. But very quickly I've had the same feeling here," he said, adding this was partly because the crew had to shoot for two months outdoors during the inclement Southern Hemisphere winter, which brought people together.

"But also because I was raised here. There are a lot of memories. I look around and the way people speak, talking to the crew each day, it's as if I were with my people," said Mortensen, who let a scruffy, salt-and-pepper beard grow for the film.

"Everybody has a Plan" tells the story of a middle-aged man who returns to the wooded islands along Argentina's Tigre river delta after a long absence. Desperate for a new start, he impersonates his late twin brother, only to discover that his sibling was part of a criminal gang.

MAN OF MANY TALENTS

Mortensen compared his latest work to other films about criminal underworlds including David Cronenberg's Oscar-nominated "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises," which earned him a best actor Oscar nomination.

Mortensen, who also paints, writes and co-owns publisher Perceval Press, is modest about his celebrity and well-known for his method-acting and zealous preparation for roles.

For "Lord of the Rings," he slept in Aragorn's cloak. For "Eastern Promises," where he plays a man with links to the Russian mob, he lived in St. Petersburg and the Urals to pick up a convincing Russian-accented English and gangster jargon.

In "Todos Tenemos un Plan," directed by Argentine newcomer Ana Piterbarg, Mortensen stars alongside Soledad Villamil and Javier Godino, best known for their roles in the crime drama "The Secret in Their Eyes," which won the Oscar for best foreign-language film last year.

"He's very deep in his way of preparing the character," Godino said, referring to Mortensen. "He's living in Tigre, he dresses like somebody from there and I admire this. He's an actor that connects with the character and he's a little crazy, crazy enough to play these characters that he plays."

Mortensen said his latest project has a small budget on a global scale but a big one for Argentina and huge potential for a country where he now hopes to return frequently for work.

"I had always wanted to shoot a film in Argentina," he said. "It's been a wonderful experience -- a real return...to see the boats, the dogs, the Argentine winter, is beautiful."

SAN DIEGO | Fri Jul 22, 2011 4:05pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - By now, most anyone who knows anything about Comic-Con International knows it has become a grand platform from which Hollywood's studios launch promotional campaigns for upcoming films and television shows.

A problem, for reporters and bloggers trying to cover those launches, is that having seen only brief clips of the films or TV shows, it's often hard to discuss them in a serious way.

But Reuters sat down with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried on Thursday for a brief chat to ferret out the details of their upcoming action film, "In Time," which is set for release in October of this year.

From its description, the movie sounds like an old-fashioned crime thriller, only it is set in the future and people stop aging when they're still young and pretty -- which is perfect for a Hollywood movie. Here's what Timberlake and Seyfried had to say about "In Time."

Q: Justin, do you get to kill anybody in this movie?

Timberlake: "Maybe. (To Seyfried) Wait, do I kill anybody in this movie?"

Seyfried: "Yeah, you kill four."

Timberlake: "Yes I do."

Q: How does that make you feel, killing somebody?

Timberlake: "Feels good. But they were all bad, okay? They were all bad guys."

Q: You can prove that?

Timberlake: "Yes."

Q: Amanda, do you get to kill anyone?

Seyfried: "I shoot somebody."

Q: They don't die?

Seyfried: "Not because I shot them."

Q: Okay, so, there's some shooting and killing. Shifting gears, had you two hung out at all before starting this movie?

Timberlake: "We actually worked on another film called 'Alpha Dog.'"

Seyfried: "Kind of."

Timberlake: "Okay, we didn't actually work together. We were just in the same movie together. As a matter of fact, there are four actors in this movie that were in 'Alpha Dog.'"

Seyfried: "Olivia (Wilde)," "Vincent (Kartheiser)," and the two of us."

Q: They say good work often comes when actors have great 'chemistry' on screen. You two certainly seem to have it, here. Had you established any sort of chemistry before the movie?

Timberlake: "Amanda's really attractive so I don't have trouble having chemistry with her."

Seyfried. "That's not true."

Timberlake laughs

Seyfried: "C'mon...Is it my nose?"

Timberlake: "That's so attractive."

Q: Okay, let me try this: Amanda, what's unique about the character you play in "In Time'?

Timberlake: "Not really anything."

Seyfried: "Not true. She lives in a very rich world, she has all the time she would ever need. She could be immortal, but she doesn't want to be, she's bored. It's meaningless to her. She wants something exciting. She finds her place in the world, and what she wants out of life by going on the run and losing all the time she has."

Q: Justin, Did you get that from her performance?

Timberlake: "I did."

Q: Did Amanda out-act you?

Timberlake: (laughs) "She certainly tried, every scene... No, I'm kidding."

Seyfried: "No. I did. At least, I tried."

Timberlake: "She's great in the movie. I love Amanda as a person and as an actor, and I think so much of her gift as an actor comes from her being a good person. I think this is the best performance I've ever seen from her."

Seyfried: "No."

Q: So many actors talk about hating to "do press." If you had a choice between a long press conference or Chinese water torture, what would it be?

Timberlake: "I'd take the Chinese water torture."

Seyfried: "Oh, c'mon press conferences are fun -- when they are only one hour...when they're two, mmmmmmm..."

Spielberg plans return trip to "Jurassic Park"

By R.T. Watson

SAN DIEGO | Fri Jul 22, 2011 6:42pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Twenty years after his Velociraptors and T.rex ruled Jurassic Park, director Steven Spielberg says the maneaters are returning to a movie theater near you -- teeth sharpened, and not for the popcorn.

Spielberg on Thursday told audiences at the giant Comic-Con International convention in San Diego that he was at work on a new "Jurassic Park" movie, delighting a packed house at the pop culture showcase.

"We have a story. We have a writer working on the script, and I think we will see a 'Jurassic 4' in our foreseeable future, probably in the next two or three years."

"Jurassic Park" thrilled audiences in 1993 with its modern-day dinosaurs developed from DNA in fossils that wreaked havoc upon a theme park where, instead of enjoying the wonders of science, the guests got eaten. The movie took in $915 million worldwide in its day and spawned two sequels.

Spielberg made his first trek to Comic-Con this year to show audiences clips from his upcoming film, "The Adventures of Tintin," which was directed by the Oscar winner and produced by "Lord of the Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson. It is scheduled for release in December of this year.

The movie is based on the comic books by Belgian artist Georges Remi, whose pseudonym was Herge, and they tell of a young journalist and his faithful dog who find themselves on numerous adventures, solving mysteries.

Spielberg said he and Jackson, a pair of filmmakers he characterized as "just two huge Tintin fanboys," began conceptualizing the movie as many as six years ago. He said they used state-of-the-art digital camera technology and capitalized on innovations developed by director James Cameron on his smash hit movie, "Avatar."

"We wanted to use animation to get as close to the characters that (Herge) invented and not characters that we would then reinvent based on big names, big movie stars," Spielberg said.

The director, a sci-fi film fan since childhood who made the genre movies "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," was at Comic-Con to receive an Inkpot Award for achievement in science-fiction movies.

He received a standing ovation from the crowd and told them: "We all love the same source material that has brought all of us here and the source material has always been the collective imaginations of so many brilliant artists and storytellers."

SAN DIEGO | Fri Jul 22, 2011 7:00pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Comic book legend Stan Lee on Friday revealed details of his new web-based, digital series "The Seekers," saying it is set in modern times on an Earth in danger of imminent destruction.

Describing his upcoming new venture with MTV as "a real epic story", Lee told Reuters that "Seekers" will have multiple characters and he hopes it will move from the Internet to TV, movies and videogames.

"It's a real epic story," said Lee, ahead of a detailed presentation of the new comic book series on Saturday at Comic-Con International.

"One of the blurbs I wrote for it says, 'We present these incidents that you're about to witness as a work of fiction in order to avoid worldwide apprehension and panic.' It has to do really with the state of the Earth and all the population on it," he added.

"The Seekers" will launch in early 2012 as a free digital comic series on the MTV Geek website and is expected to eventually become a print comic. Lee, 88, has big plans for what will be his first foray into digital comics.

"Television, movies, video games, you name it, it will be there," said Lee, who helped create Marvel Comics superheroes "Spider-Man", "Thor" and "Iron Man".

Lee said he has written a six-page treatment for "The Seekers". Thousands of years ago an alien race sent "seekers" to every planet in the universe with sentient life. When a race advances enough to a point that it might be a threat to other sentient life across the galaxy, these seekers have the ability to set off a doomsday device that will destroy the planet.

"Our whole planet is in danger," said Lee. "It has to do with man's inhumanity to man."

Three of the main characters will be;

-- The Gatherer, a seeker sent to Earth, who has recently awakened due to the nuclear and biological threats humans now harness.

-- Arthur Nordan, a renowned radiologist who recently watched his colleagues killed by the Gatherer on an expedition.

-- Jennifer Hart, a World News Network correspondent trying to get an interview with Nordan. The duo end up discovering the Seekers and the imminent threat posed by the Gatherer.

Lee said there would be many more players in the stories. "It's a multi-character series, which introduces new characters while keeping the old ones in virtually every episode."

MTV CONTEST

What separates this comic from anything Lee has done before is that he's giving an aspiring artist and comic book writer the chance to become a central part of the development of "The Seekers".

Beginning in early August, MTV Geek will host a contest allowing anyone to send in their own interpretation of "The Seekers". Artists will submit five pieces of art, while writers will turn in a 10-page script based on Lee's treatment.

Lee and his team will pick 20 entries and the online community will vote for the top five submissions. Lee will announce the winners at New York Comic-Con in October and work directly with the artist and writer to create the comic.

"This contest is a big one and it's important because we're excited to give undiscovered talent a chance to shine," he said.

"The comic book industry is expanding with digital comics and motion comics and video games. I think the opportunities are there for new talent, and this project is one way for people to get a job in the industry."

"The Seekers" will join other digital comics that will run on MTV Geek, including Teen Wolf, Divination, The Gloom, Hats, Agent Mom, Me2, Punks, Hell Town, Beowulf Jones, and 1,000.

Tom Akel, executive editor of MTV Geek, said the website has attracted over 800,000 unique visitors since its mid-October launch last year. He expects the partnership with Lee to attract an even larger crowd.

SAN DIEGO | Sat Jul 23, 2011 1:18am EDT

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - He may change his mind later, but right now Andrew Garfield says the role of comic book superhero Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot of the hit film franchise is a part that could last a lifetime.

LONDON | Sat Jul 23, 2011 1:32pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - British singer Amy Winehouse, whose hit single "Rehab" became the anthem for troubled celebrity culture, has been found dead at her home in north London, Sky News reported on Saturday.

Bollywood star delays French award due to blasts (AFP)

NEW DELHI (AFP) – Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan asked for a delay in being honoured for her work promoting cinema ties between India and France because of the Mumbai blasts, the French embassy said Friday.

The actress, who is pregnant with her first child, had been due to be made a knight of France's order of arts and letters at a ceremony in New Delhi on Wednesday.

But the former Miss World asked for the event to be postponed after three explosions shook India's financial hub during earlier in the day, killing 17 people and injuring more than 130.

The 37-year-old actress, who lives in Mumbai, asked for the ceremony to be held at a later date out of "solidarity and sympathy" with the victims of the blast, an embassy official said.

The award was to have been presented in "recognition of her contribution to the world of cinema and to the development of Franco-Indian co-operation in the film industry", the embassy said.

Rai Bachchan, who won the Miss World title in 1994, has starred in more than 40 Hindi-language films and a number of English-language films, including the Steve Martin remake of the "Pink Panther".

She is married to leading actor and producer Abhishek Bachchan, 35, whose father Amitabh, is one of Bollywood's biggest stars.

Amitabh Bachchan was given France's highest civilian award, the Legion of Honour, in 2007.

No new date for the the ceremony for Rai Bachchan to receive the French honour has been announced.

Indian investigators are scrambling to identify who was behind the blasts which came just two-and-a-half years after Mumbai was still emerging from the 2008 attacks by Pakistani Islamist militants that killed 166 people in 2008.

Murdoch tabloid Sun denies Jude Law hacking claim (AP)

LONDON – Jude Law is taking legal action against The Sun newspaper, claiming the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid hacked into voice mails for stories about his private life.

Murdoch's News International strongly denies the claim, accusing the actor of "a deeply cynical and deliberately mischievous attempt" to drag The Sun into the hacking scandal that has brought down its sister paper, the News of the World.

In a statement Friday, News International said Law's allegations "have no foundation whatsoever" and vowed to vigorously fight his claim.

Law's law firm, Atkins Thomson, declined to give details of the claim, which it said "will be considered by the court in due course."

Law is also suing the News of the World. That case is due to be heard next year.

Mila Kunis says will attend Marine ball (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) – Mila Kunis is definitely going to the Marine Corps Ball with Sgt. Scott Moore in November.

Chances are, she won't be setting up any appointments with "Access Hollywood's" Billy Bush anytime soon, though.

The "Friends With Benefits" beauty lashed out at Bush during a stop on the press tour for her new film on Thursday, revealing that Bush had made up reports that she was canceling her date with Moore, who propositioned her on YouTube, due to professional obligations.

"Do not believe what Billy Bush says," Kunis said during a press conference with co-star Justin Timberlake at her side. "Please, I beg of you. Never did I say that I was not going. He made it up and people believed it, unfortunately."

And just to make sure that the air was completely clear on the matter, Kunis stated emphatically, "I am attending ... I accepted an invitation and I'm staying true to my word."

Bush sparked outrage across the Internet earlier this week when he reported that, contrary to Kunis' vow, she wouldn't be able to attend the ball, November 18 in Greenville, North Carolina. According to Bush, Kunis will be filming two movies in November, and thus wouldn't be able to make the date.

But as Kunis told reporters on Thursday, "I got permission to be released from work for the day, so I'm flying in and flying out."

The whole saga began earlier this month, when Timberlake told Kunis of Moore's date request, which the Marine -- who's currently stationed in Afghanistan -- posted on YouTube. At Timberlake's urging, the "Black Swan" star declared that she would accept the date.

Timberlake has also received an invitation to the same ball, from a female Marine stationed in Virginia, but he has yet to respond.

Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony call it quits (AP)

NEW YORK – With three failed marriages between them, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony finally seemed to find true love together when they married seven years ago. They had twin children, went on tour together, did a movie together and even planned a music-based reality show they were working on together.

But on Friday, the pair announced they were no longer together.

"We have decided to end our marriage. This was a very difficult decision," the couple said in a statement by Lopez's publicist. "We have come to amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time."

It was a surprising split for one of Hollywood's most high-profile couples. They seemed inseparable: Lopez even danced in the background for her crooner husband when he performed on "American Idol," where she debuted as a judge this past season.

The pair, both of Puerto Rican heritage, married in 2004 after years of knowing each other. He was ending a marriage to former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, while she had recently endured a high-profile breakup with Ben Affleck.

Lopez had been married twice before in brief unions to Ojani Noa and Chris Judd and had a famous romance with Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Her union with Anthony was her most enduring public relationship. The pair did a joint tour together and starred in the movie "El Cantante" in 2006.

They also had two children, twins Emme and Max. They were Lopez's first children; Anthony had a child from Torres and another from a previous relationship.

In April, the pair, both 42, announced plans for a television show together, "Q'Viva! The Chosen," with Simon Fuller, the creator of "Idol." The show was to feature the superstar couple as they traveled the world to find the best performers in Latin music, dance and other arts with the goal of creating a live extravaganza.

The show had no airdate, and it's unclear if it will continue.

Lopez released her latest album, titled "Love?" this year. Her career, which lulled in recent years, has surged since she became an "Idol" judge.

Will sixth time be the charm for Steve Carell? (AP)

By NICOLE EVATT, AP Entertainment Writer Nicole Evatt, Ap Entertainment Writer – Sat Jul 16, 7:33 pm ET

NEW YORK – His "Office" character Michael Scott may be utterly clueless, but Steve Carell knows a thing or two. And when it comes to his sixth shot at the best actor Emmy, Carell jokes that he's got this one in the bag.

"Of course, what could possibly go wrong? How could I lose? I don't even know if that's even a remote possibility," the 48-year-old said with a laugh.

Carell's latest nomination was for his final season on the hit NBC comedy — his last chance to take home the trophy for his role as the inept Dunder Mifflin branch manager.

Carell says he'll be attending this year's awards on Sept. 18 with low expectations and no regrets.

"I'm very proud of having been on that show and all the friendships that I got out of it," he said. "An Emmy would be great, but it wouldn't make my experience on `The Office' any better because it was already so good."

Carell, who stars alongside Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone in the upcoming romantic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love," says he's still not comfortable with being famous. The movie opens July 29.

"It's something that I never expected or never dreamt of happening. I just don't want my kids to have a warped perception of me or my relationship with them," he said. "I remember driving around with my daughter and I think posters for some movie had gone up and she was just a little girl ... and she was like, `Why are there pictures of you everywhere?' And I think it was as weird for me as it was for her."
